Due to war, poverty and disease, the plight of orphans is a growing crisis around the world. As millions of men and women continue to die in the prime of their life, they leave behind helpless, innocent victims. These young children are left alone, grieving, scared and hopeless.
In traditional African culture, the extended family or close family friends would automatically take in orphaned children. Beyond supplying the necessities for basic survival, the family setting provided the love and emotional support needed to cope with the loss of parents and ensured that the child grew up to be a stable, productive member of the community.
Today, however, extended families are being stretched to the point that they can not even provide for their own immediate family, let alone the overwhelming number of children who have tragically lost their parents. As more parents die, there are more orphans, yet fewer adults to care for them. Although the resources have diminished, the desire of many loving individuals to care for destitute children has remained strong.
